Industrial Placement

As an optional part of my degree I decided to undertake a year’s industrial work experience to further my understanding and learning whilst gaining a very competitive advantage over my peers who might want to follow a similar career to me.

From August 2007 until August 2008 I worked for Debenhams, the UK high street department store. My role was as a Trainee Assistant Buyer within the Mens Accessories division, specifically Mens Essentials. This allowed me a crucial insight into the industry sector I wanted to become part of once I’d graduated and gave me great responsibilities to further my development. I was working under the Buyer and assisted the Merchandising team within our department to gain a range of knowledge on not only product details and production of the garments but business and merchandising strategies too.

My day to day routine included communicating with suppliers to give them feedback on samples and to chase product development, order raising, tracking imports, analysing sales of new product lines and maintaining samples of all the products in our department.

It was a tough but a very enjoyable and rewarding year through which I feel I have gained crucial knowledge into the industry I would like to enter. It has given me greater confidence and drive to achieve my ambitions, through which I hope to have brought into my final year at university and into the workplace upon graduating.
